The Ukrainian defence industry plans to develop a new 155-mm self-propelled howitzer and fire extended range ammunition. Development of a new self-propelled artillery will be conducted according to the standards of NATO.
That was confirmed during the report of the Chief of Armament of the Ukrainian Armed Forces of Ukraine Nikolay Shevtsov during the international scientific and technical conference “Prospects for the development of weapons and military equipment of the Land Forces” in Lviv, May 2017.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces currently operates the self-propelled 122 mm 2S1 Gvozdika, the self-propelled 152 mm 2S5 Giatsint-S, the self-propelled 152 mm 2S19 Msta-S, the towed 122 mm D-30. Current artillery pieces deployed by the forces will be supplemented by the new 155-mm self-propelled howitzers.
The new self-propelled howitzer will be able to capable of firing all standard Nato 155mm ammunition. The new self-propelled howitzer consists of 155 mm turret, mounted on a tracked chassis. The chassis will be using many components of the Oplot main battle tank.
