U.S. military aviation activity increases near Venezuela

Key Points
  • Open-source flight data shows continued U.S. Air Force and Navy transport, tanker, and combat aircraft activity linked to Puerto Rico and surrounding Caribbean airspace.
  • Analysts say the sustained tempo suggests Puerto Rico remains an active logistics and staging hub for U.S. military operations near northern South America.

United States military air transport activity into Puerto Rico is continuing at a sustained pace, according to open-source flight tracking data and aviation observers monitoring movements from the continental United States into the Caribbean.

The pattern has drawn attention from analysts who view the island as a forward logistics node for U.S. operations near northern South America, including areas adjacent to Venezuela.

Open-source intelligence researchers tracking military aircraft movements report repeated arrivals of U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy platforms at and around Puerto Rico, particularly near former Roosevelt Roads Naval Station and nearby airfields. As noted by OSINT observers, the traffic includes a mix of transport, tanker, and combat aircraft, suggesting coordinated operations rather than isolated training flights.

Recent tracking data shows multiple U.S. Air Force C-17A Globemaster III and C-130J Hercules transports operating between the mainland United States and Puerto Rico. These aircraft are commonly used for rapid movement of personnel, equipment, and supplies. Their continued presence points to an active logistics pipeline supporting forces deployed or staged in the region.

U.S. Navy activity has also been visible. Flight tracking imagery shows a C-2A Greyhound operating in the area, an aircraft typically associated with carrier onboard delivery missions. According to aviation analysts, the C-2A’s appearance may indicate support flights linked to naval aviation units operating in or transiting through the Caribbean.

In parallel, OSINT analysts have identified electronic warfare and strike aircraft operating further south and east of Puerto Rico. Tracking data shows at least two EA-18G Growler electronic attack aircraft operating within the Maiquetía Flight Information Region, which covers airspace near Venezuela. Additional F/A-18 Super Hornets were observed north of the ABC islands—Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao—locations that are routinely used by the U.S. military for forward presence and contingency planning.

A U.S. Air Force KC-135R Stratotanker was also tracked departing the Dominican Republic and heading south, according to flight data reviewed by analysts. Aerial refueling aircraft play a key role in extending the range and endurance of combat aircraft, and their movements often coincide with heightened air operations.

Puerto Rico’s location has long made it a strategic hub for U.S. military operations in the Caribbean and northern South America. The island offers access to key sea lanes, proximity to U.S. partner nations, and reach into areas where Washington maintains ongoing security concerns, including counter-narcotics missions and monitoring of authoritarian regimes.
