13 soldiers killed in military helicopter crash in Turkey

A military Cougar helicopter crashed three minutes after takeoff from Sirnak. All on board were killed. The helicopter reportedly struck high voltage lines.

The Turkish General Staff said in a statement that the AS 532 Cougar-type helicopter got tangled to a high voltage power line shortly after taking off from the Şenoba Brigade Commandship at around 8.55 p.m. according to preliminary information.

All 13 personnel on board were killed in the crash the military said, adding that an investigation into the accident has been ongoing.

The soldiers were identified as the Division Commander Maj. Gen. Aydoğan Aydın, Colonels Oğuzhan Küçükdemir and Gökhan Peker, Lt. Col. Songül Yakur, Major Koray Onay, Captains Nuri Şener, İlker Acar and Serhat Sığınak, first lieutenant Abdulmuttalip Kesikbaş, Staff sergants Fevzi Kıral and Mehmet Erdoğan, and Specialized sergeants Hakan İncekar and Zeki Koç.

They were subsequently transferred to Şırnak State Hospital.

Meanwhile, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was also briefed on the accident and he extended his condolences.
