Russian state-owned media has released a video on 22 March showing the new «Penicillin» counter-battery system.

The Penicillin is a new Russian sound and thermal ranging systems (SRS) to locate explosions and enemy fire. A Russia’s army official was quoted by the new agency as saying that the system is required to locates the positions of enemy artillery from the sound and flash spotting of their guns firing.

As each microphone detects the sound and thermal modules spotting the flash of enemy guns firing, the information is relayed to a Command Post which computes the location of the enemy battery.

The official added that the system to capable of locating 90% of enemy artillery under normal weather conditions. Enemy locations are then passed to Artillery Intelligence and counter battery tasks fired as necessary.
