Russia deploys advanced short-range air defence missile systems in Syria

During a visit of Russian Youtube bloggers at an airbase in Latakia were spotted new Tor-M2 fully-automated surface-to-air missile systems manufactured by Almaz-Antey’s Izhevsk Electromechanical Plant Kupol.

Russia has deployed advanced Tor-M2 short-range air defence missile systems in Syria after the U.S.-led missile strikes on Syrian regime chemical weapons sites.

A source in Russia’s defenсe ministry confirms deployment of the Tor-M2 systems at Hmeimim base in the northwestern province of Latakia, Syria, is the largest Russian-run military facility in the country. The short-range air defence missile system can counter a wide range of targets including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), guided missiles, cruise missiles, aircraft, helicopters and high-precision weapons flying at very low to medium altitudes.

This is one of the newest Russian air defence missile system with combat vehicle on tracked chassis is designed to provide air defence for military and public facilities against cruise missiles and other targets flying at medium, low and extremely low altitudes in the heavy air and electronic countermeasures environment.

Tor-M2 can simultaneously detect more than 40 targets, track and attack four of them at once at a range of up to 23,000 feet and at altitudes of up to 19,700 feet.
